RoleLogic › Discord autorole

Give Every New Discord Member a Role — Automatically

Short answer: RoleLogic is a free Discord autorole bot. Create one rule — “if a member lacks the Member role, add it” — and every new member is given the role within seconds of joining. Because the rule keeps running rather than firing once, anyone who joined during downtime or lost the role by mistake is corrected automatically on the next pass.

How do I set up an autorole in Discord?

Nearly every autorole bot works the same way: it listens for the join event and hands out a role. That works right up until it doesn’t — the bot was restarting, the member joined through an invite the bot didn’t see, a moderator stripped the role, or Discord dropped the event. Then the member sits there with no role and nobody notices. RoleLogic also assigns on join, but the rule that does it is a standing condition, not a one-time trigger: any member who does not have the role and should, gets it — the first time and every time after.

Why a condition beats a join trigger

The rule is “this member lacks the role”, not “this member just joined”. Those look identical the first time and behave completely differently afterwards.

Applies on join

RoleLogic evaluates a member the moment they join the server, so the role lands within seconds.

Repairs itself

The same rule runs on the continuous background sweep, so a missed join or a role removed by mistake is corrected without anyone reporting it.

Conditional autorole

Give different starter roles to different members — no starter role for anyone who already holds a staff or verified role, for example.

Autoroles people actually need

A plain “everyone gets one role” autorole is the simplest case, not the only one.

Default member role

Everyone who lacks it gets it. The base case, one rule, done in a minute.

Unverified holding role

New members get a restricted role first; a verification rule swaps it for full access later.

Skip existing members

Add “Lacks All Roles: Staff, Verified” so the starter role never lands on people who are past that stage.

Colour or ping opt-outs

Give a default notification role that members can drop; the rule only re-adds it if you want it to.

Autorole plus cleanup

One rule can add the new role and remove the placeholder in the same pass.

Autorole in a second server

Grant the starter role in a linked server too (2 destination servers on the free plan, 10 on premium).

Ready-to-use autorole rules

Copy the pattern, swap in your role names. Every rule keeps enforcing itself.

Plain autorole

IF member lacks ALL of Member → add Member

Unverified first

IF member lacks ALL of Verified, Member → add Unverified

Skip the team

IF member lacks ALL of Member, Staff, Bot → add Member

Autorole + cleanup

IF member has Verified → add Member AND remove Unverified

Default pings

IF member lacks ALL of Announcements, No-Pings → add Announcements

Network-wide starter

IF has Member (Main) → add Guest (Community Server)

Set up an autorole in about two minutes

One rule, no code, no slash commands.

1

Invite RoleLogic to your Discord server

One click. The bot only requests the Manage Roles permission — it cannot read messages, see DMs, or access private channels.

2

Position the RoleLogic role above your starter role

Discord only lets a bot manage roles below its own position, so the RoleLogic role has to sit above every role it adds or removes.

3

Create the rule: IF lacks the role → add it

Choose the “Lacks All Roles” condition, select your starter role, then add the same role as the action. That single rule is the autorole.

4

Every member is brought into line

New joins get the role within seconds, and existing members without it are caught by the next background sweep — so you never have to backfill by hand.

Why RoleLogic instead of a one-command autorole bot

Autorole is a two-minute feature. Autorole that is still correct in six months is not.

No silent gaps

Join events get missed — during restarts, outages, or gateway hiccups. A standing condition does not care whether the event arrived.

Backfills existing members

Turn the rule on and everyone already in the server who lacks the role gets it. Nothing to re-run, no member export.

Conditional, not blanket

Exclude staff, bots, or already-verified members using the same 9 condition types the rest of the engine uses.

Grows into the rest

The autorole rule sits alongside verification, tier, and booster rules in one engine — not four bots that each own part of your role list.

Add and remove in one rule

Promote a member out of the holding role and into full access in a single pass, so there is no window where they hold both.

Free

Yes — RoleLogic's free plan includes 3 rules per server with every feature unlocked. Paid plans start at $2/month for more rules. Every feature is available on the free plan: all 9 condition types, add and remove actions, cascading rules, cross-server actions, and the testing sandbox.

Frequently asked questions

Everything people ask about Discord autoroles.

How do I set up an autorole in Discord?

Invite RoleLogic, drag its role above the role you want to hand out, then create one rule: condition “Lacks All Roles → [your role]”, action “Add roles → [your role]”. Every member who does not have the role gets it, starting within seconds of joining.

Does Discord have a built-in autorole?

Discord's Onboarding feature can give roles for the specific questions it manages, and integrations can assign their own roles, but there is no general server setting that grants a role to every member on join. That is what an autorole bot is for.

What happens to members who joined before I set the rule up?

They get the role too. The rule is a condition, not a join trigger, so the background sweep applies it to every existing member who lacks the role — no backfill script and no re-invite.

My autorole bot keeps missing people. Why?

Event-driven autorole bots only act on the join event, so anything that hides that event — a bot restart, an outage, a rate limit — produces a member with no role and no retry. RoleLogic re-checks members continuously, so a missed join is corrected on the next pass instead of needing a manual fix.

Can I give different roles to different new members?

Yes. Stack conditions on the rule — up to 9 AND-conditions — so, for example, only members who lack both Staff and Verified receive the starter role.

Can the autorole remove a role as well?

Yes. A rule can carry an add action and a remove action together, which is how a verification step swaps the holding role for full access in one pass.

Will it re-add a role a member deliberately removed?

It will, because the rule says that member should have it — which is the right behaviour for a required role and the wrong one for an opt-out role. For opt-outs, add a condition excluding an opt-out marker role so members who hold that marker are never matched.

Is an autorole bot free?

Yes — RoleLogic's free plan includes 3 rules per server with every feature unlocked. Paid plans start at $2/month for more rules. Every feature is available on the free plan: all 9 condition types, add and remove actions, cascading rules, cross-server actions, and the testing sandbox.

What permissions does RoleLogic need?

Only Manage Roles. RoleLogic cannot read messages, cannot access private channels, and cannot see member DMs. It only assigns and removes the roles you have linked to rules.
